I know the weekend is all about chilling, but without the rush to the tube in the morning, I see it as an opportunity to play with makeup a little more. Rather than sticking to my workday uniform of mascara and lip balm, I tend to dig out products from my wider makeup collection and try out a few things. Don't get me wrong-I'm not looking to create anything particularly fancy (my weekends are far too low-key for that), just something a little different.
Right now, I'm flitting between four different makeup looks, each of which gives the impression that I've put in a hell of a lot of effort when I've really just spent 10 minutes, including the time it takes for me to eat my toast between mascara layers and to dance around the kitchen to Leon Bridges's new album.
As a heads-up, I wear the same base practically every day, so in each of the below, I'm wearing It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Illumination SPF 50+ Cream ($39) and Instant Full Cover Concealer as well as Benefit Precisely My Brow Pencil ($24) to fill in my erratic brows.
But what else? Well, let me show you…
For a Weekend BreakShannon Peter
Just so we're clear, just because a product is labelled for one area of the face doesn't mean that's the only place you can (and should) apply it. In fact, here, I've taken just one blusher and used it across the eyes, cheeks and lips to make things super quick, which is what you want when you're away for the weekend and itching to get out and explore. Plus, using the one shade gives the whole look this monochrome feel so everything goes together, which can be a little trickier when playing with different colours.Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour Stick No21 $25Shop
I prefer to use a cream blusher, just as I feel the finish lends itself better to the lips and eyes, rather than a powder formula. And a stick format makes things even simpler, as you can literally swipe and blend. Chanel's new one comes in this really nice rosy hue which I've used here.Glossier Lash Slick $16Shop
I finish the look off with a little bit of mascara, but rather than my normal heavyweight ones, Glossier's is super natural, which I think lends itself to the softly-softly vibes I'm going for here.
For BrunchShannon Peter
I know lilac is pretty trendy right now, but in makeup terms, I've always struggled to find a way to make it meld with my olive skin-somehow, it just doesn't sit right with the yellowish undertones of my skin. I'll let you be the judge, but I think I've just about cracked it with this soft mauve eye shadow look that I wheel out for brunches and beyond.Marc Jacobs New Nudes Sheer Gel Lipstick in Eat Cake $32Shop
I don't always wear lipstick, but this Marc Jacobs one is basically the same colour as my lips, so it doesn't end up looking a mess when I'm chowing down on my avocado toast.
For a Night OutShannon Peter
I've never been a real advocate for the traditional "smokey eye" per se, but when I want to up the ante on my eye makeup, I tend to do this version. It's basically just a great big cloud of terra-cotta buffed on way beyond the crease line and followed up with a little bit below the lower lash line too. It's not mega dressy, so I could wear this to work too.Nars Narsissist Wanted Eyeshadow Palette $25Shop
The best investment if you're in to warmer, burnt red eye shadow tones like I am. Here, I used a few of the matte shades, but there's not a single pan in the palette that's gone untouched, and that's rarely unheard of, I swear. You could do this with your fingers and keep things super casual, but I prefer to use a brush so it doesn't get too messy.Nars Sun Wash Diffusing Bronzer in Laguna $40Shop
I legit love this bronzer-it's not too heavy nor too wishy-washy, and it doesn't cloak skin in an unmovable armour of powder either. I swirl this big brush round in it and then buff it all over the face; I haven't got time for contouring.L'OrГ©al Paris Miss Baby Roll Mascara $18.00Shop
To finish proceedings, I tend to apply a few coats of L'OrГ©al's mascara. It's more feathery than anything else, so it doesn't look OTT with the intense eye shadow I'm going for.
For an Afternoon in the PubShannon Peter
So this look is super chill: just a little shimmery cream eye shadow and a slick of red lipstick.ВGlossier Lid Star in Slip $18Shop
Glossier's Lid Stars are like a gateway drug into the eye shadow world. No, they don't look like much as you're putting them on, but they do lend lids this super pretty, iridescent sheen that'll push even the most shadow-shy makeup wearers to experiment more. I apply a single swipe on each eye and pat the colour gently to blend.Laura Mercier Viva Cuba Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick in Chicas $19.60Shop
We all know it-a red lipstick makes you look like you've got your act together, even when you haven't. I use mine to convince my Sunday pub crew that I'm not hungover.
See what I mean? Super easy, not-too-fancy weekend makeup looks that don't take up too much of that precious lie-in time.
